Connections?

Has anyone ever read "The Great Gatsby"? If so, are you seeing any connections between it and "Jane Eyre"? Especially in the colors? Or is it just me?

In "Gatsby", colors are everywhere. On every page, it is guaranteed that there will be at least one color. It doesn't matter if it is just mentioned casually or used to describe something, it is still there. Just take a look at the book cover once.

In "Jane Eyre", you see colors almost just as often. Red, white, black, and purple seem to be the most prominent though.

Maybe I am over thinking this or maybe I'm not. What do you guys think?

  1. Well it's nearly been two years since I've read the book on my own time, but I must say that I remember very vividly colors being a motif in the book. As I recall they were very often used as a way to highlight the contradictions going on in the book. (contradictions seemed to be the biggest point to me) So basically, I agree they are both important in the two books, but I think they having varying roles within the texts. In Jane Eyre they highlight the different focuses in her life, (red for passion in the beginning, and white for purity in the end) but in the Great Gatsby they emphasize all the points trying to be made, not just a select few.

  2. I just finished re-reading Gatsby, Emma, and I agree: colors are big in both (Red and white in JE, white and green in GG). Nice call!
